New Puppy?

THE PUPPY PREPARATION SURVIVAL LIST:

Confinement (short and long term)

• Crate (only big enough so the puppy can turn around in it; if too big, the back must be blocked off until they grow into it)
• Crate liner (can also use a towel or blanket-though some puppies prefer a cold surface)
• X-pen (exercise pen – metal pen either open sided to attach and configure as you need or completely round with door)
• Baby Gate (to block off areas you do not want your pup to access)

Feeding Tools

• Bowls for water and food
• Kong (Traditional style for stuffing)
• Tricky Treat Ball
• Twist-n-Treat or Waggle by Busy Buddy

Food

• Premium Dry Dog Food (Kibble) – look for whole ingredients – no meals.
• Premium Canned Dog Food  - for Kong stuffing layers
• Raw Diet
• Home Cooked Meals

Training Treats -Soft and easily broken apart without crumbling

• Freeze dried liver
• Look for healthy  additive free treats

Chew Sticks

• Beef Tendons
• Achilles Tendons
• Bully Stix
• Raw Marrow Bones (2-4” for puppies)
• Sterized bones stuffed with canned dog food or other healthy foods

Walking Management / Leashes / Collars

• Adjustable collar, buckle or snap
• Two 6’ thin nylon leashes for dragging -  one for in-home management and one for outside management
• 6’ Leather leash for walking
• Gentle Leader Head Harness or Sense-Ation No-Pull Body Harness
• Long line (10-15’) for off leash training

Miscellaneous

• Soft plush squeaky toys
• Squeaky Tennis Ball or other Ball

The Potty Training Procedure:

• Make sure you have treats on you when you take him out to eliminate.
• Decide precisely where the bathroom will be in the yard. Bring him directly to that spot at least every 20 to 30 minutes awake times.
• Go there regularly: first thing in the morning, last thing before bed, 10 to 20 minutes after meals and water, each and every time he comes out of  confinement, and frequently (every five minutes or so) during playtime.
• Cheer your puppy and reward the moment he goes in the appropriate place.

• Confine to one room: never, ever give him access too more than the kitchen or easily cleaned area
• Pick up food and water—do not allow free access to food and water. This is the key. If you control “in-put’ you can predict “output”.
• Supervise whenever your pup is not confined, especially if he’s “full”. If you must take your eyes off him, even for a minute, crate him or bring him with you. Attach a thin 6 foot leash that you can leave dragging while he is not confined to the crate. This will help you pay close attention to your pup and if a household distraction arises (phone rings, someone at the door, child crying) you can easily catch and bring your pup with you!
• Interrupt mistakes immediately with a fast verbal noise. Catch him as he starts to go, not afterwards. After interrupting him, hustles him outside to the bathroom area: praise if he finishes there. Then clean up the indoor mess.
• Never punish late: if he makes a mistake 2 seconds prior, you are too late. You must catch him in the act to reprimand effectively.
